Those of you who know little Jason Dineen know that he’s a very special little boy. While Sharilyn and I were over at their house last, I spent a good while trying to figure out what little Jason had done to make the Xbox that I gave them cease to display the games that were saved onto the hard drive. He has apparently been discovering his way around the technological world by pushing buttons and playing with controllers and figured a way to make the Xbox behave quite differently than before. Oddly enough, I stood beaten by the little genius who had made it so that I couln’t return the Xbox back to it’s original functionality. I thought about this little story when Karen (Jason’s mom) put up the most precious picture of little Jason … and I just have to share it with you. He’s going to be a smart little boy and hopefully a very saavy young man some day. I told Karen that he could come work with me … once he learned what pushing buttons and tweaking settings actually meant. Makes me think about what our children are going to be like some day … pretty interesting thought.
I have to admit, as I was watching PopSiren (an awesome video podcast that’s normally geared toward the female gender) I saw them demonstrate the coolest little unipurpose website I’ve seen in a while … stripedbgs.com, a site that allows you to create striped backgrounds and save them for a variety of devices and resolutions. Here’s a random one that I liked. Go check it out if you’re in the mood for an interesting stripey flare for your site/wallpaper/iPhone/etc.

I’ve just setup Sharilyn with her own Netflix queue. She’s able to choose which movies she wants to watch and keep it separate from the movies that I choose. It’s a convenient way to allow us to both order movies without one person not being interested in any of the movies that we’ve rented. I really like Netflix and the flexibility that it gives us to watch movies on our own time. Life can get a little crazy and it’s nice to not be locked into a specific time-frame in which to pickup, watch and return a movie or suffer the looming consequences of the dreaded “late fee”. Since Sharilyn has her own queue, she can now choose movies to her own liking without worrying if I will like the movie or even care to watch the movie. This leaves me free to rent movies such as ‘Rambo’, ‘Live Free, Die Hard’ and my personal favorite, ‘What About Bob?’.
This got me thinking … many of you don’t really know Sharilyn. Yeah, sure, you think you know Sharilyn … but you don’t really have any clue who she is or what she likes. You look at her, like I did for about 20 minutes when I first met her, as a sweet … girly … cutsie-pootsy kind of girl who is too small and fragile to ever bother with movies other than Disney films. Well, and I’m sorry to have to put an end to this image you have in your mind, Sharilyn is much … much more complicated than you think and I can prove it by her Netflix queue.
Sharilyn likes her girly-victorian-romantic-musical-sappy-lovestory just like any of you ladies out there. ‘Definetly, Maybe’, ‘Mansfield Park’ and ‘Cassanova’ are certainly in that category. These movies point out the lovely, sweet natured little lady that all of you know. Then … the dark-side … ‘Doomsday’, ‘The Eye’ and ‘Fido’; the latter of which you might expect to be a movie about dogs, which is actually a movie about undead-braineating-zombie who someone has kept as a “pet”. You’re beginning to understand? Let’s venture out of the Netflix queue and into our personal collection, shall we? One day I came home with a handful of movies that made Sharilyn squeal with glee … ‘Dawn of the Dead’, ‘Land of the Dead’, ‘Shawn of the Dead’, ‘28 Days Later’ and ‘28 Weeks Later’ all movies about zombies (in case you didn’t already know). Oh, not to mention the fact that, while flipping through our OnDemand selection of movies, Sharilyn decided on watching ‘Boy Eats Girl’ … a heartwarming tale of a young high school boy who dies, is raised again as a zombie by his mother and goes on to turn the majority of his high school classmates into zombies, only to be saved by his wonderful non-zombie girlfriend.
Get the picture?
So … next time you picture Sharilyn fluffing the flowered pillows on the bed, knitting a lovely white crochet table-runner, or even baking a wonderful angel food cake … remember that when the lights go out and the DVD turns on … there’s most likely going to be flesh-eating-zombie creatures making her smile like a kid in an undead candy store.
Journalist Carl Honore believes the Western world’s emphasis on speed erodes health, productivity and quality of life. But there’s a backlash brewing, as everyday people start putting the brakes on their all-too-modern lives.
